The mission of the Center is to investigate behavioral, cognitive, and organizational factors surrounding workplace injuries and highway collisions. Responsibilities:

  • Principal Investigator on challenging Institute research projects, and Co-PI or investigator on other projects. Maintains extensive external network within area of specialization. The researcher filling this position will be expected to conduct original research from the perspective of safety as a process -- or set of processes-- of adaptation to complexity; such processes being driven by changing demands and/or unexpected events. He/she should have the willingness and capability to examine topics such as risk perception, fatigue, team performance, human error, organizational safety climate, and safety systems from a conceptual framework which embodies some combination of the following: human systems integration, macroergonomics, cognitive systems engineering, sociotechnical systems analysis.
  • Identifies new strategies and emerging opportunities in safety research consistent with the mission of LMRIS. Develops novel theories, applications, methodologies and principles within scientific specialization to solve contemporary business relevant workplace safety issues. Proposes and pursues new directions and develops new paradigms.
  • Mentors other researchers and post-docs.
  • Consistently creates a climate conducive to generating ideas through staff presentations and seminars.
  • Conceives, plans, conducts, analyses and reports on experimental and/or field studies, including preparing proposals for directors, technical review committees, internal review boards, reporting on progress, and may work with practice-oriented colleagues within Liberty Mutual Group to interpret and implement research findings.
  • Actively contributes to external committees, organizes internal and external conferences, workshops and meetings. Leads international groups.
  • Conceives high-impact research program, and/or develops/coordinates Institute research.
  • programs with the goal of publication in peer reviewed periodicals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • This position's work will compliment the work of collaborating colleagues in the Center for Behavioral Sciences which conducts original laboratory and field studies to increase understanding of the behavioral, cognitive, and organizational factors surrounding workplace injuries and highway collisions, and informs the Institute's other multidisciplinary research programs.

Position Description
Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions. Evaluates customer/operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Post-doctoral Research Associate

The Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking for a post-doctoral research associate in hman factors in health care and patient safety.

Degree and area of specialization: Ph.D. required; preferably in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Health Services Research or closely related field.

Experience required: Research experience in human factors and ergonomics, health care, organizational change, and systems engineering. The preferred candidate should excel in effective and positive communication; be able to work collaboratively as well as independently; have experience in working on large scale research projects; have experience in writing publications. The preferred candidate should have significant training and expertise in the discipline of human factors and ergonomics and its application to health care and patient safety. S/he should be familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods, data collection and analysis, and summarizing and publishing research findings. The ideal candidate will be looking to lead their own project, publish extensively and develop new research ideas.

Principal duties: The Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement (CQPI) is a research center with a large research program devoted to applying systems engineering, human factors engineering, and industrial engineering approaches to patient safety, healthcare worker safety and medical errors reduction research (Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety or SEIPS). In a project funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, we will design, implement and evaluate an intervention aimed at engaging families in bedside rounds for hospitalized children. The successful candidate for this position will work with Professor Carayon (CQPI and Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering-ISyE), and Dr. Cox (School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Pediatrics) on this AHRQ-funded project related to human factors in health care and patient safety.

Specific duties: Participate in the management, design, planning, and execution of the research project on “Engaging Families in Bedside Rounds to Promote Pediatric Patient Safety”.

Meet regularly with research team members to plan projects’ activities, discuss progress, and examine projects’ results. Participate in the development and implementation of the intervention to improve family engagement. Supervise and participate in data collection and analysis efforts.

Assist in developing human subjects protocols for research project and prepare appropriate documentation for Human Subjects Committee review. Collaborate in the preparation and writing of progress reports and publications, and in the presentation of the research project at local, regional and national meetings.

Full-time salary rate: minimum $40,000 annual (12 months), depending on qualifications

Health Care Research in Human Factors/Cognitive Psychology

The Health Services Research Section, Dept of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and the Houston VA Health Services Research Center of Excellence is seeking a candidate to join their growing program of research in the areas of human factors, cognitive psychology, medical errors and health information systems. The potential candidate will be in a unique and exciting position to contribute their knowledge and expertise to bolster research in areas including but not limited to use of electronic health records, medical errors (especially diagnostic errors), clinical decision-making, electronic communication and other patient safety/health information technology related domain areas. We build upon nearly 20 years of collaborative research among our multidisciplinary investigators. Additionally, we have a long history of collaboration with several local institutions at the world renowned Texas Medical Center. Our research extends from patient experience, to clinical practice and outcomes of care, and to the development of health care policy. We have an established track record of supporting, mentoring and developing outstanding research leaders.

This position will utilize human factors engineering and/or visual design methods to design and test leading-edge multifunction printing and imaging solutions. You will serve as a key member of a dynamic and exciting multi-discipline R&D team. As part of that team, you will support design and user research teams in the area of human factors principles and appropriate ergonomic design for hardware/software user interfaces for our client’s consumer and enterprise printing and imaging solutions. You will take a system view as you analyze customer needs and user behavior. You will work with Senior User Experience Engineers to define usability strategies for products, gather customer requirements, set usability goals, and develop system requirements and design solutions. This will utilize user-centered design process and task analysis. You will be developing high-fidelity prototypes to test user interface concepts as well as evaluating competitive offerings. You will support cross-functional design teams to address usability issues as needed across product to ensure positive customer experience.

Experience: Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a human factors related discipline (Computer Science, Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Visual Design/Arts, or Human-Computer Interface Design). Ability to do rapid prototyping of user interface concepts. Demonstrated knowledge of hardware/software design and usability evaluation techniques (perception, cognition, experimentation, and statistics). Ability to work in cross-functional and cultural teams. Communicates and sells ideas. One or more years experience in product development life cycle including contextual inquiry, UI/Visual design, usability testing, and data analysis/statistical analysis.

Skills: Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Logical problem solving. Demonstrated effective communications, presentation, negotiation, planning and facilitation skills. Proven ability to interact effectively with customers and developers. Excited about technology and has the desire to learn new things.

Assistant/Associate Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering

The Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) at North Carolina State University invites applications for an academic tenure-track position in ergonomics. The anticipated start date for the position is August 16, 2010.

The Fitts ISE Department has four core areas, including ergonomics, manufacturing, production systems, and systems analysis and optimization. These are complemented by three new research thrusts through the Fitts Institute, including health systems engineering, bioproduction and logistics. There are approximately 170 graduate and 185 undergraduate students currently enrolled in degree programs. Responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate teaching in physical and cognitive ergonomics, coursework development in new areas, such as human-robotic interactions and rehabilitation engineering.

Candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree and be committed to original and independent research, to establish research facilities, to lead interdisciplinary research teams and to network with industry, and collaborate with the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina (housed in the ISE

Department) on applied research projects. ABD candidates may be considered, but doctorate must be attained by date of hire. The Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington invites applicants for a tenure track faculty position.
